“It appears someone beat us to it,” Jason said as he moved the lantern around the cabin. “Coronado was a ragamuffin but I doubt he was this untidy.”

“He wasn’t,” Morgan said. “Rachel and I visited this very cabin before we docked. I can assure you at that time everything was in an upright position.”

“Did you find anything of value?” Jason asked.

“Just the map, nothing else,” Rachel said.

The shattered cabinet Jason was lifting dropped to the floor. “Map? What map?”

Rachel lowered her head and mumbled something before she turned to face Morgan. She mouthed, I’m sorry.

If Morgan was upset, he did not show it. “We found Coronado’s navigational map, that’s all. We planned to examine it together, the three of us, when time allowed.”

Jason’s eyes went from Rachel to Morgan. “So you haven’t peeked at it since you discovered it?”

“It lines my quiver, which reminds me I’ll need to find some arrows before we leave,” Rachel said.

“The map may very well pinpoint the location of Coronado’s treasure,” Jason said.

“I must assume Sebastian’s men have extracted that information from Coronado’s crew members by now,” Rachel added.

Jason looked at Morgan. “She doesn’t know?”

“Pirates are very secretive when it comes to their possessions. Normally, the ship’s captain and no more than one or two trusted crewmembers know the treasure’s whereabouts,” Morgan said.

“How is that possible?” Rachel asked.

“Simple.” Now it was Jason’s turn to speak. “Usually a handful of men guard the loot at all times. When Coronado’s ship approaches, a signal is given and the guards row two boats to the ship. The treasure chests are lowered onto the boats along with the captain and perhaps a loyal friend. I’d say in Coronado’s case, it would have been Daniel Axe.

“After the transfer is made and everything is found to be secure, the captain returns to his ship. This is when the reward gold and silver is distributed to his men. Afterward, it’s back to sea for more looting and pillaging.”

“You seem to know a lot about a pirate’s routine,” Rachel said.

“I’ve been studying the sly bastards for years,” Jason replied. “I know more than any man should about those murderous thieves.”

“Let’s make our departure,” Morgan said. All we’ll find here is splinters.”

“I couldn’t agree more. My stomach is telling me to make for The Maiden Goat post haste.” Jason took Morgan’s shoulder as he walked past him. “No more secrets, my friend,” he whispered in his ear.”
